I’m…a little confused here. How can she be assigned to a volunteer program? Isn’t that something she’d need to sign up for? i mean… it’s right in the name, unless it’s done differently in this place than America?
Some volunteer programs have waiting lists because so many people want to sign up. She could have signed up earlier and only gotten a place now, or it could be Miel’s boss pulling strings to do something… weird. I don’t know if he’d be trying to move Abeille to the new city to get Miel to follow, or separate them so that Miel wouldn’t want to stay where he is.
Can be both. Abeille gets an offer to move as a volunteer to the new city to make both and Miel sign onto the deal, and when the volunteer task reaches completion, Abeille is moved back. Gets Miel where his boss wants him without followup distraction and both Miel and Abeille have only themselves to blame so that this does not result in rebellion, defeating the purpose of the maneuver.
It could be that she is being assigned to assist with a volunteer program in some way, not to be the volunteer herself. For example, being someone who organizes volunteers or assists them in getting started on whatever volunteer work they are to do.
Hmm. Of all the ways I thought this might have gone, I don’t think I was expecting that. I thought Mr. Acier would try to separate them. It looks like it’s more along the lines of, “Well, he won’t go because of her, hmmm? Well let’s remove that obstacle…” [by bringing her along???]
“Volunteer” could refer to something plant related. A volunteer is something that grows on its own without help from a gardener, such as a weed. If the boss man assigned Abeille to this, he could be calling her a weed essentially. I’ll be interested to see the update > u <
This sounds like Boss is trying to take up all her free time so she won’t have any spare to ‘distract’ Miel with. Usually these programs run outside of work hours, so it would be after her shift ends. Work her too hard and for too long, she either won’t have any free time left or the time she does have she’ll be exhausted.
Do they get paid? I had the impression that they did not; that they work for the betterment of the community, because things need to be done, and to have something worthwhile to do.
Each citizen receives basic meals, living quarters, health care. They receive a set amount of credits per month to spend on other things, but if they work they can earn extra credits for additional spending money.
Well that shoe dropped real quick

Ohhhh. I think that’s the smartest theory I’ve heard. Makes sense and is very logistic.
Aside from workplace humor “volunteered”, I think she could be being assigned a spot in a program that she volunteered for.

I hope that the corporate culture there is healthier than this, but I definitely have friends who joke about being “volun-told” for things.
Or it could be she’s assigned not as a volunteer but as someone who WORKS WITH volunteers

I worked for the Federal government and “volunteer” had a different meaning with them.
Usually it means “We don’t have to pay you”
I love Abeille’s face in panel 2 and how unrestrained she seems, until the last panel.

Hi (C)love. Ha! Get it? Get it?
… I’ll see myself out.
I’ve been calling the boss man Mr GLACIER in my head since he appeared, so 😀

Thanks! I was just talking yesterday with a friend about how this could work here and now.
I found this strip a week or two ago and just now caught up. Now, I only get to read two new ones per week instead of 30 per session. 🙁
