I think that says more about current culture than about you. Whether it’s good or bad is open to opinion. (I’d say a little column A and a little column B.)
Im curious as to how a child who grows up in a strict “no touching” environment would think that a pat on the back is an empathetic response, isnt that a learned behavior?
As far as I remember, children are raised with touching being okay because physical touch is necessary for their mental (and physical?) well-being and development, so comforting pats on the back would be something they receive as babies/infants/young children. At a certain point, such as around the age these children are, they begin to learn that touching is a strict no-no and get trained to not touch people…
Robert Bly referred to the “ashes time” (adolescence), where your parents stop sheltering you from the truth about adults. When kids become goths. Monotropa must have the gothiest of goths.
This is a bit heart-breaking. They’re taught from such a young age that touching is a bad thing — consent is good to teach early but even for something as simple as a shoulder pat… It feels like in the course of worrying about consent they’ve somehow vilified the very concept of touching another human being. The girls look surprised as heck that Abeile is okay with touching and it almost comes off like simply touching another person is sexual assault or something.
Did you notice how on the previous page the kids were touching each other to reassure? They’ve clearly internalized “don’t touch _adults_” even though the rule they’re being told is “no touching”.
I think it is learned, behavior, LittleIvyKitty. What is the backstory to this world, where people are so shy about physical touching? I can imagine a history where some alien plague, spread by physical contact, left people terribly inhibited.
I love your name. Supposedly, patting on the back is similar to the feeling of your mother’s heart when you are in the womb. So, that could be contributing.
This page is so cute, can’t stand it! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (sound of losing composure)!!!!
Okay this is adorable lol.
This is so sweet but I’m really worried she’s going to get in trouble for this…
I don’t know why, but this particular page made me think about this “no touch” in a different way. Mostly from a consent point of view. Hm…

How frightfully!
And unsustainable.
I am now terrified she’s going to be in very big trouble for this….
the “remorse face” in panel 5 is exquisitely rendered

I love it.
I love these kids. The back pat has just become my favorite panel of the whole comic.
