You know, it took me too long to realize, and it has almost nothing to do with this comic but… the machine aided sex might have been invented for long-distance relationships, not simply because future people are afraid of touching. Certainly, it makes one human need not reliant on touch, so this taboo got in place more gently than Victorian taboos, if you can call the plague that scientist saved the species from gentle…
What I’m saying is, if Miel takes this job he and Abeil could still share sex and tenderness, just not their favorite.
You know, I always thought the first reason those machines were created was for people “adapted” to different planets (hence, bearers of bacteria and other lifeforms that could kill their partner) to still be able to get a safe simulacrum of physical intimacy.
Your idea, though ? It reverses my hyptothesis (from “coming from different planets, meeting somewhere”, to “same planet, unable to meet anymore due to the distance”) and it makes as much sense. Actually even more… I love it.
I got the feeling that Miel’s boss is going to pop the question about Miel’s choice of accepting or declining the job offer in this scene, but everyone will probably be thinking that here. Probably too about what kind of work relationship there is between Mr. Acier and Miel.
