That reaction from the lunch ladies, reminds me of when I’ve worked in similar jobs. Maybe they are expressing “so, you’re trash too. welcome.” There seemed to be a miniature Queendom with a chip on it’s shoulder, among the minimum-wage workers and I was, like Abeille, not fitting in. Then I disgraced myself by accident, and they accepted me after that. Not that that is what is happening here, necessarily. The portrayal of restaurant workers is so funny, in this comic. Like this and the Cornucopia waitress.
Atta girl, Abeille. Stick your nose in the air and shame the devil. The sooner people think you don’t care if they’re talking about/laughing at you, the sooner they’ll get bored and move on to the next piece of scandal.
When it comes to the other employees, I can’t help but think of Richard Gere’s toast in Runaway Bride. “May you find yourselves the bullseye of an easy target, may you be publicly flogged for your bad choices, and maybe all of your noses be rubbed in all of your mistakes.”
