It’s funny that when I hear someone say something like that, I expect them to look like that guy. At least, in a comic. The hairstyle, mannerisms and facial expression fit the words.
Yeah, you expect them to have some sort of slicked back hair style. Normally with a lot of hair gel or spray or something too. I sometimes wonder if they are going to have it slicked back like that all the time why they don’t just get a haircut. Seems like it would be easier and less greasy.
It’s not about Clove alone, but Clove IS part of the cafeteria staff so therefore the guy’s words could be considered to be a dig at someone that Abeille cares for dearly. Not to mention, Clove initially was going to be a pilot but he decided to join the cafeteria staff instead since it was less pressure to communicate clearly. He’s hardly ‘low-IQ’, and I’m sure everyone else in the kitchen staff has their good points and skills they excell at. Mr. Wears-Lunch is just being a prick in general, making assumptions about others just because they serve food or have different interests.
The entire service industry idea, on earth, feels strange. Having people serve me.
Someone makes coffee for me. They have a similar relationship to the business as I do, as a customer. I feel like I should at least do the dishes or something, to repay them for their effort. But, people treat them with disrespect. It’s disgusting.
It must be doubly irritating for Abeille, since the insult refers to her too and she was treated poorly by the lunch ladies.
I feel like it’s less class and more “we’ve been taught to value people’s smarts or education as their primary value”. I feel like her mom has done that exact same thing too, so seems like it’s more widespread than this world. IRL the white vs blue collar is where a lot of the super classist stuff flows from and I appreciate that the author is making this a slightly different conflict.
Either way it’s very gross, so I definitely agree about that part. 🙁
“we’ve been taught to value people’s smarts or education as their primary value” is a form of classism. there’s not a lot of distinction to be made between classist oppression and the allocation of educational resources to the most privileged. so definitely this society is still having issues with classism, even though it seems that (and do correct me if i’m wrong) there’s not a lot of people living in poverty because of robust public programs.
I don’t see this ending well but fuck that guy, he deserved it. I do hope this starts a trend of Abeille standing up for herself and not taking anyone’s shit. Even the nicest people have their breaking points.
Yeah, I can see this incident being used as “proof” of Abeille being unstable or something, but that was super satisfying to see. I think anyone who’s worked in the service industry can empathize here…
I’m glad she’s standing up for herself, but I am equally worried Acier or her mother will get wind of this and use it against her. She just wants to be happy, dang it!
It’s a timeless discrimination; anyone whose supposedly got it better in their society can develop the ego of thinking that their blessings entitles them to condescension over the downtrodden or the lower classes. A jerk can come from anywhere, no matter of wealth or knowledge can make a difference.
Long time reader, of all of Gina’s comics, and first time poster, but this isn’t the first time we’ve seen someone get dunked on when a person was offended. Ivy’s sister also splashed Holly three times with some form of beverage before without consequence. I think Miel also got splashed by a lady he was flirting with before him and Abeille were a thing fully.
I have to wonder if the splashing liquids on people came about because of the no touching. With instant dryers, as we’ve seen in the rainy season start, it’s more a thing of inconvenience.
I know Abeille is probably going to wind up with some sort of punishment for this, but still… GO GIRL! SHOW NO REGRETS!
YESSS! Throw them your generosity in the face! 🙂 I love it!

Oh honey. That was a swipe at Clove, too, with the “Low-IQ types” comment. He deserves to be covered in Abeille’s lunch.
All cafeteria stuff are considered “Low-IQ types”. It’s not about Clove. Check ch01-p13a. Miel’s colleagues make a jab at Abeille’s intelligence, too.

oh the shock on the Entitled Jerks Face…LOL…Darn Gurrrl! Good Job!
This society has a REAL classist streak, geez. Never trust anyone who’s a jerk to service staff.

Guy’s lucky she didn’t just whip the whole tray at his head. >:/
Is it ever mentioned in story or supplemental materials how the no touching part of their culture developed?
Are manners also “obsolete/outdated” in this world?

I hate the people here!!
… Oh yeah, that is very cathartic to see tbh. You go girl, get ’em!
hmmm. Not saying the guy didn’t deserve it, but that was a really childish move. I feel this is only going to make things worse.

That was all outside of work though. I doubt she’s going to get arrested, but seems like she is going to get in trouble.
Of course, he’s not going to learn a damn thing from this.
Oh dear. Panel 2, Abeille – you, uhhh, you look like your mum.
It may be cathartic, but I agree that this will not go well.
Jerk sounds just like her mom passing judgment on others
