The way he needs time alone, reminds of how Abeille has gone private occasionally, since the Tent situation. If that’s right, it’s an admirable trait. It would be sweet if she has learned that from Mallow when she was younger.
Ahhhh my heart ;_; if I’m interpreting this correctly, Mallow just realized Abeille has really grown up since he saw her last, and her building a life on Monotropa means she really won’t come home except maybe to visit once a couple of years (space travel times are no joke). It must be a bittersweet feeling to see your kid grow up and spread their wings, because on one hand, they are happily living their best life, on the other, your relationship with them is going to change, they won’t need you as much as before, etc. I don’t even think it’s about Amaryllis in this page, Mallow has his own feelings to cope with regarding Abeille’s decision to stay.
A good sign and a bad sign. Things will have to hurt before they get better.
He’s taking what his daughter says to heart, accepting her sympathy without making it her burden. But that also means he might be dealing with this totally alone. Does he have ANYONE besides Amaryllis in his life to talk to?
He’s either going to be deep in thought or make a call he doesn’t want to. The result is going to be the same when he gets home. Mom is going to go batshit.
Can Abeille apply to work at the rink? She’d get her cold in, be able to offer something no one else on this planet readily could, and maybe get paid to start a new ringette team to really irk her mom.
OMG YES. I can easily see her coaching monotropians on how to skate, since it was obvious from previous pages that most people were having a hard time. I wish we could see her really show off those skills.
Aww. I have a feeling it’s not just him being tired. He’s rethinking his entire relationship with his wife and realizing that he might not be happy. I’m sure he’s also realizing how well his daughter is doing on her own. That she’s allowed to make her own choices. I hope he comes to a good place and help Abbielle with her boundaries and maybe even starts upholding his own. I’d like to see a world where his wife actually gets some fricken therapy and learns to respect others. But we shall see.
The thing is that therapy won’t work if someone doesn’t see a problem and wants to change. TBH, I hope Mallow and Abeille can talk to a counselor – living with an Amaryllis really messes with you on so many levels – but unless and until Amaryllis sees that her behavior and mental state are a problem, therapy would be wasted on her (or might even give her new tools to mess with people. Sad but true).
I think he’s also realizing that the Abeille he knew on Pasque is different from the Abeille we see now on Monotropa, and this Abeille isn’t as willing to back down to her mother.
Oh man, you’re right. If he called her right now it would not be a good scene. Either she would come down and try to ruin this too, or scream at him how he “failed to get her to come home” or something similar over a “phone”(?) at him, or heck…try and find a way to make it about her. None of that is a good outcome. I hope he is taking a moment for himself, internalizing how his daughter is doing so well, maybe thinking about his own choices, and gets them both hot cocoa and just ENJOYS this moment.
Mallow looks unwell. Looking back in earlier chapters, he was definitely looking a lot healthier. Is it grief perhaps? Maybe he also wants Abeille back, but as he sees that she’s happy, he’s not eating or sleeping. Maybe he doesn’t agree with the planet’s climate? Stressed by being torn between his wife and his daughter? It’s worrying…
Mallow look like someone trying to hide a bubbling panic attack, or some sort of trauma response to the thought of Amy being upset at him/something. I really worry about him…

… Suddenly he’s reminding me of Kazuo from RS. That’s not a good sign.
I was thinking the same thing, he definitely doesn’t look well..
Oof. That dramatic distance. Daddy’s girl is grown up and ready to lead her life.
A good sign and a bad sign. Things will have to hurt before they get better.

That smile, its genuine, but it’s like… eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we may all be dead. He knows more misery is to come…
He suddenly feels so very tired. Doesn’t he?
It’s the progression of his blush. A subtle, amazing, and effective detail.

I think it said it was only seasonal. That wouldn’t be a full time solution for her.
UNLESS there is a ringette team. Muahahaha

That 2nd panel is giving me some serious introspection vibes from Mallow. Hopefully the first step down the right path.
It’s the heartbreak for me.
Do NOT contact your wife right now, Mallow… please.

Ah, I think Mallow has just become my favorite character for this chapter. This is an interesting page, Gina
