At no point has Amaryllis attempted to understand that Abeille is a person, separate from Amaryllis’s intentions and personality, even when she was literally getting Abeille fired for something that isn’t even considered strange on Pasque. So, no, she doesn’t mean that. But hopefully Abeille has the strength to just… not leave.
Worse, I think she doesn’t know that she hasn’t tried to understand. I “know” things in various ways. For some compulsive behavior, I know it’s wrong, but lie to myself so that I can give in to my compulsion. I think Amaryllis knows on some level that she is being abusive, but not on the level where she includes that knowledge in justifying her actions to herself. She has a mental illness.
I’ve felt confused by Abeille’s demeanor in the last few pages. For the first time I think she looks vulnerable, or something is brewing within her. It is the Abeille I love that doesn’t hide her feelings, but I’m worried for her. I guess that is how they acted when the 3 were together, maybe. So, Abeille might be acting the way she did, casually letting each attack from her mother land nowhere. I think she’s having her own private ceremony while participating in their ceremony.
Once again, I’m struck by how fixated Amaryllis is on appearances. The memorial plaque she chose has Evette looking like a winsome ghost, fixed and almost crystalline. It looks expensive, but I don’t really think Evette would’ve liked it. It seems more like what Amaryllis wanted Evette (and maybe Abeille) to be, and how she’s “rewriting” Evette to be closer to that ideal instead of reality.
Maybe a tree or bush would’ve been more appropriate as a memorial for a scientist? I can’t remember if Evette focused on bio/botany or something else. Abeille has spoken several times about Evette’s dream of growing a garden – which is the basis for Abeille’s gift. Perhaps Abeille intended to save seeds from one harvest to the next as an almost immortal tribute?
IDK, this just gives me an icky feeling. Like a memorial for a trans person but done under their deadname/old life or something.
I can see it now.. her Mom tells her that she has no choice but to go home… but there’s a twist– Abeille can’t go back, because she got rid of her thermogenesis. *cue dramatic music*

Abeille, your seeds are just as important, I hope you realize that.

“When we get back to Pasque”? By we you mean you two minus Abeille, RIGHT?
I get the feeling she doesn’t, but here we are.

She’s still assuming that she’s going to lure Abeille back to her small, frozen bubble of a micro-managed world.

I’m placing my bet: this trip is the last time the three of them will be together.
